WELCOME

...to my corner of the internet!

My name is Maxine Tam, and I am a junior majoring in graphic design at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Recently, I completed a semester abroad at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where I focused on industrial design, particularly with an emphasis on human-centered design in the context of product design.

My passion for design sparked late junior year of high school, during my capstone engineering course, where I was introduced to human-centered product design. It was at that when I realized design was an avenue for both self-expression and creative problem-solving. All of my experiences, thus far, have constructed my love for human-centered design and contributed to my decision to study design by shaping both my passionate and pragmatic selves.

What captivated me the most about design was its inherent potential for fostering cross-functional collaboration across a variety of fields, and here I am embarking on a journey to transcend conventional boundaries of design while constantly pushing my creative limits to discover the next best thing!

With an unwavering sense of curiosity and commitment to a growth mindset, I’m eager to explore and tackle new avenues and challenges in the realm of design. I aspire to broaden my horizons by exposing myself to a variety of novel experiences to become a more inclusive designer and innovator who can draw upon a range of analogical experiences to bolster my creative potential.

THROUGH ALL MY EFFORTS...

I want to use my work as a catalyst for social change by creating effective, impactful products and narratives that not only spotlight but also actively contribute to resolving global issues such as social equity, climate change, gender equality, and more.

BESIDES DESIGN

To the more adventurous side of me… I love all kinds of water sports! More specifically, Canyoneering! The first time I ventured into the world of canyoneering was in Cebu, Philippines. I was immediately swept by the thrill of navigating rocky terrain and leaping off cliffs into the waters below. It truly is a heart-pounding delight! I would recommend it to everyone and anyone!

Besides water, I have recently found another love of mine, skating. I just got a longboard, and by no means am I amazing at it, but boy is it fun!

On the calmer sides of myself… I relish in simple pleasures like picnicking, swaying in a hammock, nurturing my collection of plants, and indulging in a good book. One dream of mine would be to have a beautiful garden, greenhouse, and sunroom filled with a diverse array of flowers, herbs, shrubs, and more! Currently, I'm the proud parent of 21 exquisite plants.

And of course, we can’t forget about food! I adore all kinds of foods, with a special fondness for Asian dishes that make me go "chef's kiss"! During my time studying abroad and exploring the culinary landscape of Southeast Asia, I have found a particular comfort and love for delights like Halo-Halo, Hainan Chicken Rice, Laksa, and Chicken Satay.
