Women have been in conflict with pressures of meeting ideals of womanhood in every corner of our social structures– having to choose between femininity and strength. To embody both is rarely revered. My work represents women who fearlessly hold their own and embrace their unique synergy of femininity and strength.
Exploring shapes and forms using various materials, I wanted to accentuate the strength and femininity of women in this wearable piece. I chose to work with metals for its perceived “strength,” and cellophane for its perceived “femininity,” to create flowers. The flowers’ iridescent qualities project women’s colorfulness at any angle. Iridescent, when used to describe a person, means “someone who broadens how you think about yourself,” which sums up my goal for my Synergy project– exploring how conflicting elements in our social structure can coexist.
